The Smiths 80s Band T-shirts

The Smiths Hatful of Hollow T shirt
The Smiths T-shirts at Amazon UK
If you were asked to name one of the most influential British bands of the 80s, then The Smiths would certainly be in the top five for a good many of you, I would imagine. The alternative rock/Indie pop band from Manchester may have only been active for five years (1982-87), but in that relatively short period they managed to create a pretty substantial following. The band still appear to have a big fanbase judging by the number of T-shirts that are sold through my website simplyeighties.com

Best places to buy The Smiths T-shirts

Amazon UK have an extensive range of designs, including the most popular Tee featured at the top of this page, as well as designs adorned with the band's frontman Morrissey. If you're from the U.S. then you'll be delighted to know that Amazon.com stock a range of Tees, too, although it's not as ample as the UK store.

A more substantial range of brand new, "Buy it now" T-shirts can be found at ebay, although, once again, if you're browsing in the British Isles then you're probably going to see a bigger range of designs. Many quality suppliers sell their wares through ebay these days, so you'll probably be able to pick up a bargain here.

If you would like a more quirky design than the more popular choices, then try a search for the newest arrivals at Amazon UK as this usually throws up a few different ideas.

You'll find many unique and exclusive by independent artists at Redbubble.com who ship worldwide. Use the following link;

I've hand-picked my favourite designs below. Please note that you can find the designs printed on a full range of T-shirts and other items by scrolling down the page on the site.

The "I would go out tonight but I haven't got a stitch to wear" Charming Man lyrics T-shirt is particularly amusing.

The Smiths album covers baseball shirt for men
The Smiths Record Covers Baseball Shirt
This baseball shirt features nine vinyl record covers and offers something a little different to the standard short-sleeved shirts. It's sold by a company calling themselves Morrissey and The Smiths at Amazon (they sound official, although I have no idea whether they are or not) and they have three pages of high quality merchandise including heavy weight shirts, bags and posters.

The Smiths Sheila Take A Bow Heavyweight T-shirt
Sheila Take A Bow Ladies Tee
This ladies heavyweight T-shirt is one of many designs being sold by the aforementioned Morrissey and The Smiths company.
The Smiths Tour 1983 T-shirt
The Smiths Tour 1983 Daffodils T-shirt

Now, just about any fan of The Smiths will, no doubt, remember that performance on The Tube in 1984 where Morrissey can be seen with a bunch of daffodils in his back pocket. Therefore, this shirt featuring daffodils is a nice touch.

Here are some more of my top picks...

Well, I hope I've provided you with some decent designs. You can see many more retro rock and pop band T-shirts ideas at my website.

Teen Wolf 80s Movie Costume

Scott Howard Teen Wolf Beavers 42 Costume
Scott Howard Beavers Teen Wolf 80s Costume
I was a huge fan of Michael J. Fox's films back in the day, and still like to occasionally watch his 80s movies from time to time, including Back to the Future and Teen Wolf. The latter would make the ideal theme not only for an 80s costume, but also for Halloween, too, which is fast approaching as I write.

In the 1985 movie, the lead character Scott Howard (who was played by Fox) suddenly finds himself transforming into a werewolf, often at the most inconvenient moments. However, he learns how to control the change and use it to his advantage in the Beavers basketball team.

Thankfully, there is an awesome ready-made fancy dress costume available which is actually a popular seller through my website (simplyeighties.com) throughout the whole year, believe it or not. Of course, during the run up to Halloween there is an even bigger demand for the costume. We do not sell the costume directly, but instead, link to a trustworthy supplier on Amazon for a small commission.

The outfit comes in two sizes and includes the jacket, vest, gloves, wig and beard.

If you have an eye for a bargain, then you may also like to check all the numerous suppliers selling Teen Wolf Costumes on ebay These are brand new, "buy it now" items from leading costume suppliers, so there is no need to bid.

80s Polka Dot Ra-Ra Skirt Costume for Ladies

80s polka dot ra ra costume for women
80s Polka Dot Ra-Ra Costume
Polka dots seem to become fashionable at some point in almost every decade, and back in the 1980s, there was a resurgence in 1950s style polka dot fashion. Madonna wore black and white polka dot leggings with a white tutu skirt for the movie Who's That Girl, and Princess Diana donned several dotty outfits which had a strong 50s influence.

You can read more about 80s polka dot fashion at my website, but for this post I'm going to concentrate on a low-cost costume that will look fantastic at any 80s themed event or party, and you will certainly stand out from the crowd.

The costume above includes a pink polka dot ra-ra skirt and a matching bow headband. Unfortunately, it's only available in small/medium, so you may want to check out the alternative skirts below. The camisole top, leg warmers, lace tights and neon beads are not included, but you can buy these at low-cost from Amazon, and this leaves you free to create your own unique costume. As a suggestion, during the latter part of the decade, ra-ra skirts were worn with a blue denim jacket (sometimes covered in button badges), lace and leather.

Here are some great suggestions for completing your 80s costume;

The real benefit of buying a skirt is that you can create something very unique, adding as many or as few accessories as you choose. While buying a complete fancy dress costume is very convenient, it leaves you at risk of someone else at the party having chosen the exact same costume, which can be a little embarrassing!

Iconic 80s Logos and Slogan T-shirts

80s Logos and slogans Collage

For this post, I'm going to take a look back at the most iconic logos and slogans from the 80s. As this is a fashion blog, I will link to the logos printed on T-shirts, allowing you to pay homage to the companies, films and TV shows you grew up with. These tees are ideal for retro themed parties and festivals, too. Many of the slogans such as "Frankie Say Relax" and "Choose Life" were printed on T-shirts back in the day anyway, making them an authentic choice for 1980s dress-up.

Top of the Pops Logo

This TV music show was essential viewing as a teenager in the 1980s, and the classic neon logo featured above (used from 1981 to 1986) is probably the most iconic. A full range of Top of the Pops logo T-shirts representing the 60s to the 90s is available at Redbubble.

Unisex Frankie Says Relax T-shirt
Frankie Say / Says Relax T-Shirt

It was way back in 1984 when this slogan T-shirt was first launched, and the idea came from Frankie Goes To Hollywood's PR manager Paul Morley, who was working for the ZTT record label. However, he has a lot to thank designer Katherine Hamnett for, as it was her original 1983 slogan T-shirts (such as "Choose Life" worn by Wham in their video for Wake Me Up Before You Go Go) that gave him the inspiration. Hmm, was it inspiration, or did he just steal the idea?

However, the old saying "what goes around comes around"springs to mind, as his slogan "Frankie Say Relax" was ripped-off (Frankie were a band, of course, and not one person) and there were numerous copycat "Frankie Says Relax" T-shirts available - "Says" was used instead of "Say" to avoid copyright infringement. It is this unofficial design that is now the most popular.

Frankie Say War! Hide Yourself T-shirt

A number of follow-up slogans were also released including Frankie Say Arm the Unemployed and Frankie Say War! Hide Yourself. I managed to find the latter slogan on a Cafepress T-shirt, and this would make a nice alternative choice to the original shirt.

I also highly recommend checking out the full range of Frankie Say T-shirts at Etsy, as there are oodles of suppliers selling the tees here.

Dukes Of Hazzard General Lee T-Shirt
General Lee 01 T-Shirt
Dukes Of Hazzard General Lee 01

I have fond memories of watching the Dukes Of Hazzard on a Saturday tea-time back in the early 80s, especially Daisy Duke (played by Catherine Bach) who I had a bit of a crush on. This is not an iconic T-shirt design, but the orange General Lee Dodge Charger car with its 01 numerals certainly is - you may remember Bo and Luke Duke used to climb in through the windows. There are lots of designs available from many suppliers, but the raglan sleeve tee above appears to be the most popular. If you're after a cool, retro T-shirt then you can't go far wrong with this one.

Wham Choose Life T-Shirt

Choose Life T-Shirt
Here is the aforementioned T-shirt as adorned by Wham back in the 80s, and also Roger Taylor from rock band Queen, in the video Hammer To Fall. It was later popularised by the film Trainspotting. There are literally dozens to choose from in a whole array of colours these days, but it is the original white T-shirt with black, block lettering that remains the most popular choice. It's ideal for wearing to an 80s party, or just casually - the choice is yours!

Wake Me Up Before You Go Go T-shirt

Another alternative design features the title of the No.1 Wham! single from 1984. There are many tees available foo both men and women.

Here is yet another iconic 80s design that was worn by Flash Gordon (Sam J. Jones) in the camptastic, cult 1980 movie. It was also worn by Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, and the band provided the theme song to the movie, which was penned by their guitarist Brian May.

Superman T-Shirt
Superman Retro Logo T-Shirt
Superman Logo

That iconic logo by DC Comics made its first appearance in 1938. It's now recognised the world over and the continued release of Superman films has ensured that its popularity never wanes. The red and white T-shirt above is a proving to be particularly popular, and has a very retro design. However, there are dozens of designs and colours to choose from, including the traditional blue and red one, for both men and women. See ALL Superman T-Shirts.

The classic design could be worn to represent any one of the original Christopher Reeve films from 1978, 1980, 1983 and 1987, although you may want to forget about the disastrous fourth movie!

The movie and its logo, plus the DeLorean DMC-12 time machine are most certainly an iconic part of the 80s, and I've picked out this T-shirt design which best represents the movie. It's also the best rated and most popular choice through our website, through our link to Amazon UK.

Ghostbusters 1984 Distressed Logo T-shirt
Ghostbusters 1984 Logo T-shirt

Ghostbusters 80s Logo

Just about everyone recognises this logo from the 1984 movie starring Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver. I've picked out this T-shirt which features a distressed look and is also receiving excellent feedback from customers. Ghostbusters was a thoroughly entertaining film that I watched at the cinema with a friend back in the day, when it cost just £1 to get in.

Atari Fuji Logo T-shirt

Atari Logo

There can be hardly anyone who doesn't recognise the Atari Fuji logo, and the company was a huge part of the 1980s with its consoles (such as the 2600), computers (XL/XE/ST) and classic video games including Asteroids and Missile Command.

Sinclair ZX Spectrum T-shirt

Another widely recognised 80s logo is Sinclair, a company who brought affordable home computing to the masses with its ZX80, ZX81 and ZX Spectrum computers. Show your love for the Speccy with this T-shirt by Bulldog, which is receiving rave reviews and is excellent value, too - it's my top pick!

Ever Ready Batteries Logo T-shirt
Ever Ready Logo T-shirt
Ever Ready Logo

Before Duracell, Ever Ready was the No.1 choice in batteries, and just about every child of the 70s and 80s who grew up in the UK will remember that iconic logo, and using the batteries in science lessons at school. I always remember that our school always used the cheaper blue batteries, rather than the red ones cheapskates!

Anyone who lived in the UK through the 70s and 80s will certainly remember this ident. This was the weekend version of Thames Television, which broadcast on ITV from 1968 to 1992. This T-shirt is available at Redbubble.

Who remembers watching Dickie Davis presenting World of Sport, and Big Daddy wrestling Giant Haystacks on a Saturday afternoon on ITV? I found this T-shirt at Redbubble which is perfect for reminding yourself of those long lost days.

British Rail Logo T-shirt
British Rail Logo T-shirt
British Rail Logo

Before the Tories privatised everything there was British Rail. The state owned company operated from 1947 until 1997, and that logo is instantly recognisable by everyone over a certain age. It's astonishing that there are still Intercity 125's in service (these were built from 1975 to 1982) on a number of rail networks in 2018, which goes to show that everything was built to last back in the day.

There is a full range of British Rail logo products available at Amazon.co.uk.
