80s Party Balloons and Hanging Lanterns

Traditional Party Balloons
Traditional Party Balloons
Further down this post I'll be showing you some fantastic, low-cost hanging lanterns will brighten-up any 80s party. But firstly, I'm going to discuss the good old-fashioned party balloon.

Let's face it, a party without balloons is like rum without cola - it doesn't go down very well! Balloons have been used for celebrations since the 1800s, and you still regularly see bunches of different coloured balloons tied onto a tree in the garden or onto a front door to let everyone know there's a party going on.

Back in the 80s, bunches of multi-coloured balloons would always decorate a room at discos or birthday parties, and you could buy multi-packs which had a mixture of those long, sausage dog balloons and the more traditional shaped ones.  They would come in a wide variety of clashing colours such as yellow, orange, blue and red, and you can still buy such colours today. You can also buy rocket balloons which make a loud squealing noise when you let them go - great fun for kids and adults alike!

80s Slogan Balloons
Now, nothing could shout out "this is an 80s party!" more than these balloons. They feature the two most iconic slogans to come out of the great decade. These block letter slogans originally adorned T-shirts, of course, but printing them onto balloons is a clever idea and these would look fantastic at any 80s event. These are sold by 80s Material Girl at Amazon.co.uk. Although not available at the U.S. store, I have seen them being sold on eBay U.S.

Retro 80s Monsters - Halloween Costume Ideas

There's nothing I enjoy more than curling up in front of the fire on a cold, wet evening while watching an old monster or horror movie on the TV. I'm particularly fond of the old black and white movies, and those from the 70s and 80s - the more ridiculous the monster, the more I enjoy it!

For this post, I bring you a selection of ideas which could be used for 80s, Halloween and horror themes parties and events.

Skeletor from Masters of the Universe

Remember the 80s cartoon series? You can become He-Man's biggest enemy, Skeletor.

This is certainly not the cheapest option for a Halloween or 1980s themed costume, and you may want to consider the alternative hoodie costume by 80s Tees, which is cheaper, but still looks very effective.

If I was to choose from the two costumes, then I would go for the Hoodie. Customer reviews suggest that the mask in the first outfit is rather ill fitting.

The hoodie is not available at the UK store, but you can purchase direct from 80s Tees who ship worldwide.

Jason from Friday The 13th Costume for Men

Jason Vorhees from Friday the 13th

No less than eight films were released in the series during the 1980s, making Jason one of the most recognisable and creepy horror characters from the decade. The costume above is the deluxe version, and, therefore, looks the most authentic. However, there are a number of options available, including a separate hockey mask and machete.

Freddy Krueger

The classic, 80s slasher film by Wes Craven received rave reviews and spawned four more sequels which were all released in the 1980s. Krueger is certainly one of the most memorable horror characters from the decade, and there are a number of costumes and accessories available. Just the sight of that claw, hat and gruesome face is be enough to send a shiver down my spine!

The Honey Monster

"Don't forget to tell 'em about the honey, Mummy". This character probably isn't relative if you're residing in the U.S. (about 50% of you are). But if you're as old as I am and live in the UK, then you'll remember this funny-looking character from the Sugar Puffs TV adverts. There are plenty of suppliers on Amazon who sell this costume in various sizes and the prices vary greatly, so I have linked to all of them so you can obtain the best price. The costume includes a full-over head mask, jacket, gloves and boot cuffs, and is definitely going to get you noticed!

Frankenstein's Monster

Frankenstein Monster Costume

Can there be anyone who hasn't heard of this creature? The Mary Shelley novel was first published way back in 1818 when she was just 21 - what a glorious imagination she had. Frankenstein's monster is not the most original idea for Halloween, but the range of costumes is quite varied, so you're still likely be wearing something that looks unique, given the big differences between each costume and mask.

If you don't wish to wear a full costume, then you can easily get away with wearing just a head mask. Wear with a baggy, dark shirt (maybe with a few rips).

Now, that is like looking in the mirror first thing in the morning - that's a pretty scary mask, but kind of amusing at the same time! You can also opt for a more light-hearted, funny look with the green Frankenstein hat. There range of masks and head pieces available is wide and varied.

If you watched the 1987 movie Hellraiser, then you'll know all about the Cenobites leader Pinhead. The official costume includes a mask, robe, and gloves, although it's pretty expensive. You can also opt for just a mask instead.

Teen Wolf Costume

Teen Wolf

This costume is based on the original Scott Howard wolf character played by Michael J. Fox and not the newer series. The original movie remains the best, in my opinion, and this costume looks pretty authentic and includes the jacket, yellow vest, wolf gloves, wig and beard. This costume is a popular choice all year round on my website simplyeighties.com, and anyone who knows anything about 80s movies will recognise this one.

Monsters don't get much bigger than this one, and anyone who watched the climax to the 1984 movie Ghostbusters will remember the giant Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. This officially licensed, inflatable costume is ideal for Halloween and if you don't get noticed in this then you may as well be naked!

Some Old Magazines from the 80s

For this post I thought I'd dig out some of my old 1980s magazines from the loft, dust them off (atchoo!) and photograph them. So, without further ado, here they are - Sara.

Sounds magazine Nov 15th 1980 Adam Ant

Published between 1970 and 1991, Sounds was a weekly pop magazine published in the UK. It was in direct competition with Melody Maker and NME and covered mostly progressive rock.

Kerrang! wasn't a magazine that I bought regularly, but here is one of the few issues I did buy which features the spoof heavy metal band Bad News - Rik Mayall, Ade Edmondson, Nigel Planer and Peter Richardson - which was created for The Comic Strips Presents... TV series on Channel 4. The first issue was a supplement in Sounds on 6th June 1981. It was then launched a monthly magazine, before becoming fortnightly, and then weekly sometime in 1987. The mag is still being published, and there is also a TV and radio station, too.

Smash Hits was a mainstream pop magazine aimed at young teenagers and pre-teens. It was published fortnightly between 1978 and 2006. The magazine was at its peak during the 1980s. The format was more light-hearted and fun than rival pop mags.

In 1986, new wave, glam punk band Sigue Sigue Sputnik told us that they were the future of rock 'n' roll. Hmm, well after just a couple of Top 30 hit singles and a No.10 album in 1986, and one measly Top 40 hit co-produced by Stock, Aitken and Waterman in 1988, in July 1989 they decided to call it a day.
